MAB Responds to Overturned School Bus – Charlotte, NC
April 29, 2009

“Dozens of students were taken to emergency rooms at three Charlotte-area hospitals after the activity bus they were on flipped on I-77 near west Brookshire Freeway.

According to the highway patrol, the driver, Tonya Crowell, ran off the road, struck a sign, and hit a guardrail causing the bus to overturn.

The students were from Cox Mill Elementary in Cabarrus County.  They were heading to Camp Thunderbird in southwest Charlotte for an overnight field trip.

Roughly 60 people were on the bus when the crash occurred.  Thirty-four were transported to area hospitals and the remaining 26 were taken by a CATS bus to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department’s Law Enforcement Center.”

National Response Plan

Sartin Services, Inc, and the NCR of Washington DC lead by Montgomery County Fire Rescue, Minneapolis/St. Paul lead by Minneapolis Fire Department and others State and Federal agencies, such as FEMA and Homeland Security, across the country have developed a National Response Plan for the deployment of MAB Evacuation/Ambulance/MCI/Rehab buses. The plan would provide operational and procedural guidelines for requesting agencies to operate and staff the emergency response vehicles in case of a hurricane or other disaster.

“When massive flooding began in N.D. Wednesday, two specially-equipped mass casualty vehicles were deployed from Minn. to aid in evacuations and emergency response.”

“The MAB Evacuation/ Mass Casualty Vehicle, from N.C.-based Sartin Services, is a mobile triage apparatus designed to handle a large number of patients at once. A typical model can support a crew of six EMS responders providing BLS care to about 20 patients. Other models can handle upwards of 24 patients, or about 14 patients, but with an expanded capacity for ALS care.”
