Greensboro Firefighters Battling 4-Alarm Apartment Fire Near UNCG – Guilford County MAB Bus On Scene

Update (3/15 9:16 am): City engineers are at Spartan Village looking at the building. Officials won’t reopen West Lee Street until they can determine if the building is structurally sound.

Update (3/15 8:23 am): Students who live at the Lofts on Lee are temporarily allowed to return home to collect belongings after being evacuated Thursday night. Assistant Chief Hunter said students won’t be able to stay until firefighters that the building next door is structurally sound.

Update (3/15 7:20 am): Firefighters have not yet been able to get inside the building, according to Assistant Chief Hunter. 

Greensboro, NC — Greensboro fire crews are on the scene of a four-alarm apartment fire at an apartment building under construction on West Lee Street.

The fire at Spartan Village was reported shortly after 9 pm Thursday. Fire investigators said the building was under construction and scheduled to open in the fall for students.

Greensboro Police Department said 17 students from the Lofts on Lee, the building beside Spartan Village, were evacuated as a precaution. Those evacuated stayed with friends or were placed in other housing on campus. No injuries have been reported.

Police have all lanes of West Lee Street closed between S outh Aycock Street and South Tate Street due to a fire. It could take fire crews until noon to reopen them.

Drivers are encouraged to use alternate routes of travel and to exercise caution when traveling in the area around the fire.

GPD said 20 fire companies and about 75 fire personnel were dispatched to the burning building.

UNCG students are on spring break this week.
