New emergency transportation unit unveiled in Westchester
YONKERS – A federal grant of $475,000 has paid for Westchester County’s first and only Major Emergency Transportation Unit for the Yonkers City Police Department.
The vehicle contains medical treatment stations, command and control stations, inter-agency communications capabilities and can securely transport 30 to 40 patients.
Mayor Michael Spano said the vehicle will be available for emergencies anywhere it is needed in the region.
“It is considered a national asset, meaning it can be deployed across the region, not just here in Yonkers, and the fact that it is placed here in Yonkers shows how strategically important our Yonkers Police Department is to the security of this region,” Spano said.
In addition to responding to large-scale emergencies, the unit can also be used for evacuating hospitals or nursing homes and can also be positioned at large public events and gatherings.
