Tour bus flips with more than 50 adults, children on board

MUNFORDVILLE, KY (WAVE) – A tour bus with over 50 people on board flipped over in Hart County.

Kentucky State police said the accident happened around 6:30 p.m. Central time in the 7100 block of State Road 728.

According to police, 55 people were on the bus: 21 adults, 34 elementary students, and the one driver.

Kentucky State Police say a group of students from Hart County Cub Run Elementary School were on their way from the school to Washington D.C. on a non-school sanctioned field trip.

Police said everyone on board the bus were transported to Hardin Memorial Hospital or Caverna Memorial Hospital by ambulance or personal cars for precautionary reasons. They said all injuries are considered to be non life-threatening.

The bus was heading east on KY 728 when the driver went off the right shoulder of the road while going around a curve and overturned.

“We have a couple of lacerations. Nothing that appears to be life threatening. I don’t even believe we have any broken bones. It looks like it’s going to be minor cuts and scrapes,” said Trooper Jonathan Biven of the Kentucky State Police.

Despite the fact that it wasn’t a school trip, the Hart County Schools Superintendent came rushing to the scene while some of the students were being transported to the hospital.

“There were probably 20 kids still here all shaken up and all waiting for their parents to come. It was a very emotional time,” Ricky Line said.

A manager at Hardin Memorial Hospital said that 14 people came to hospital from the crash via ambulance and regular cars. They said all of the victims have non life-threatening injuries and were expected to be treated and released.

The bus had just left Cub Elementary in Hart County and made it about five miles into the trip when the crash took place.
